As 2009 winds down (and it can’t be fast enough for anybody I know), needed to come of out vacay time and post some changes. Let’s start with GAYLE ALLEN, who is now Creative Director of QVC up in PA. She has a fab background that includes serving as VP, Creative Services at Kingworld Productions in NYC, and before that heading up the Promotion & Design Departments at local TV stations including WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, KRON-TV in San Francisco, and WFAA-TV in Dallas. Well Dunne! Gayle.

Out Sacramento way comes word that the Hearst NBC affil, KCRA, has grabbed LARRY KELLOGG to be the Creative Services Director. Larry will make the move from KOAT in Albuquerque. He’s also worked for Hearst in Oklahoma City. Just keeps moving west. Well Dunne!

If you adore Hawaii and want to work in TV, LORENA ALCANTARA is on the prowl for a 10 pm News Producer at the Hearst-owned ABC affil in the islands, KITV. It’s a unique TV market and deserves the term “paradise”. Ah, the trade winds…the palms…love it there. Lorena would love to hear from you.

Belo’s KMOV in St. Louis is on the hunt for a Creative Services Director.

Two Well Dunne! Talents are celebrating birthdays in the next few days. LA’s BRANDON ANGELO puts another candle on the birthday cake New Years Eve. And New Years Day is when Chicago’s NICK SANABRIA celebrates his natal day.

SCOTT WEBER, who calls south Jersey his hometown, is happily sitting under the palms in the Tampa St. Pete market (on the St. Pete side actually) doing his videophotog thing and editing thing at Hearst’s WMOR. Lensing (as they call it in LA) runs in the family – his wife is a photojournalist at WTSP in the same market. Cool. Scott, who was out of the biz for a bit and was doing oil trading in Palm Beach (you may make that “oy” face now) is happy to be back at the creative game under CSD DAVE LAWRENCE. Shout out to WMOR’s fab Sales Manager, ROY TYMM. Well Dunne! Scott. Now back to your Avid.

OK, so it should NOT be a big surprise to anybody who has ever shopped with my friend SUE RAYMER and me, but a new study from NBCU shows woman are buying more big ticket items and we’re really quite good at finding the right thing. Duh.

How rich are you? Your income bracket can be predicted by your choice of TV entertainment – your shows are your ‘tell’.

Ooppps, this could be bad news for your sales departments.

Don't get your knickers in a twist until it gets clearer, NBC. Is the sale to Comcast the real deal or not? THE WR AP says yes...the parties in question say no. So, there you are. But it's today's talk for sure.

Saying adieu to the Bluegrass state is JENNY CLEMENTS, who has taken up residence in the Triangle. Why? Because she took the promo director slot at WRAL FM. Jenny was in Louisville as the Promotion Director for Lite 106.9 WVEZ and Country Legends 103.9 WRKA in the Derby City. Thanks to SHELLY LESLIE at WRAL TV for the heads up.

Well Dunne! Talent’s DEBBIE GRATTAN just finished a project for SALLY GANZ at WSOC. Oh wait…you can’t check it out until I put it up on the net. And that will happen…well, it WILL happen.

Settling into Charlotte is TRAVIS COLLINS, the newly hired creative writer producer at Raycom’s WBTV. Travis moves east from Abe Lincoln’s Springfield, IL. He’ll be working with CSD JOHN RICE and should enjoy the mild Charlotte winters and gorgeous Spring to come. Well Dunne! Travis.

Meanwhile, DALE WYMAN is heading to the California capital, KCRA to head up the Hearst affiliate’s NBC operation. He’s left the NBC affil in Las Vegas – after 22 years. Broadway bound, so to speak, is multi-talented CRAIG FLEMING. He’s headed back to New York City to work on the creative team at FOX, headed by BRIAN BLUM. Craig once did that writing and producing thing at WNYW, so it’s a homecoming. Craig has been at Boston’s CBS WBZ as well as at Comcast’s CN8 in Philly. He’s also worked at Pittsburgh’s KDKA. They add their tonsils to those of long-time station image great JIM BIRDSALL. VERY excited to be working with such a talented group of folks all round. Shout out to CSD RICK SWANSON and Production pro RYAN SUBICA as well as producers CHERYLYNNE CROWTHER and MARK GINTHER.

Former CSD TODD BALLANTYNE is reading this blog from Europe. Or maybe he’s just enjoying backpacking around and enjoying himself. His post-TV career has paid off…he recently sold his two Environmental Home Stores in the Philly market and is taking some well deserved time to see The Old World. Well Dunne! Todd. OK – time to set the record straight. The Creative Services Director of CBS’ Boston operation – WBZ and WSBK - is PETER MASUCCI, a native Bostonian born and raised. He’s been at the station for quite some time, his BU sheepskin in hand, and has been Promotion Manager as well as Brand Manager. Peter loves the writing and producing and branding end of the job in particular and is a family man. Wahoo. Sounds like he’s the go-to guy with Beantown questions. He started out at indie WSBK and has been doing well ever since. Big Well Dunne! to you Peter!

And yes, that means that the previous posting that SCOTT WOOLDRIDGE of WCCO in Minneapolis was not correct. It was confirmed by the person leaving the job, but inaccurate. Scott is loving the north country and isn’t going anywhere. If this has created problems for him, he can have his folks call me and I’ll show them the email that said he was the man. Gee, I feel like Sally Field in Absence of Malice, only no Paul Newman. Her line in that movie sums it up: “It’s correct but not accurate.”

Getting a promotion is CHRISTINA MILLER whose business card now reads SVP/Strategy, Marketing, Promotions with Turner Sports and Cartoon Network Enterprises. She had been VP Consumer Products at Cartoon and now she’ll be dealing with all the league partners with the Sports side. She’ll also be trading her NYC digs for something in Atlanta. In addition to Turner, Christina has also worked with Hit Entertainment. Well Dunne!

Where did all the time go? The calendar says it’s been 8 years since the towers fell. 8 years…translated that equals 96 months, 416 weeks, 2,912 days, 69,888 hours, 4,193,280 minutes.

Time certainly changes things. The man who stood in my office when the second plane hit the building is gone…cancer. All the colleagues I worked with are scattered, each moving on in their own way to marry, divorce, have children, bury friends and embark on new endeavors. I look at the calendar and know it’s been 8 years, but I can remember the shock, the confusion, the adrenaline pumping and not knowing whether to fight or flee. All of that part of 9-11. All still very real with little of the softness that time promises to bring.

If anything seems to have emerged now that the panic button is no longer being pushed..it’s this: we can all pinpoint a moment when as a whole, we started to ask what our lives are really all about. Why are we doing things? Does your job really have meaning? Are we expressing our inner self, sharing joy, being kind, becoming better people because, as we saw on that beautiful Fall morning, life can change in a second.

How about remembering in your own way…examining your heart and sharing the best part of yourself that reflects the unique and compassionate one-of-a-kind soul you are.

The newest little bundle of joy to arrive in the Chicago area missed being born on 9-9-09 by just a little, but proud papa JIM MARKETTI doesn’t care at all. He’s thrilled to welcome Sophia Rose Marketti to the world. She debuted at 8.5 pounds and 21 inches long…a beautiful baby who, according to papa Jim, resembles mom. Well Dunne! Markettis. Pictures will no doubt follow shortly.

Neo-Pangea, the PA based agency that has done some amazing digital video and interactive projects for NatGeo has just finished up one for Wal-Mart. In connection with The Martin Agency, they created ''Your Zone” an innovative 3-D online experience that makes rooms come alive without pushing furniture around and hurting your back. Very cool. Remember when this technology was only available at the MIT Media Lab?

If I could, I’d hire the guy who wrote an open letter to RUPERT MURDOCH in regards to the layoffs at the LA Fox affil. He’s a fab writer and he has cojones, too.

Chapter 5 ~ New Orleans, 1988
In 1988, the WDSU-TV facility stretches a whole block between Royal and Chartres Streets, just behind the Royal Orleans Hotel on St Louis. The station uses part of the historic Brulatour Mansion, and the courtyard off Royal is one of the most photographed locations in New Orleans. The entrance to WDSU is through the courtyard on Royal Street and the massive garage, where the WDSU news vans and trucks park is on Chartres. With its narrow hallways and labyrinth passages, it’s not an ideal television station, but as a place to work with its historic patios, arches, fountains, and doors, it’s quite charming. And for me, someone new to town and to TV, the location, right in the heart of the French Quarter, can’t be beat. Walk past the news vans and trucks out the huge garage doors at the back on Chartres Street and turn right and the famous Napoleon House is on the corner. Turn left and Jackson Square and the St. Louis Cathedral is a block away. Pastry stores, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and poor-boy stands like Johnny’s (a sign in Johnny’s proclaims, ‘Even our failures are edible’) are everywhere.

For a guy who grew up in the suburbs of Philly, it’s a like a gumbo, a phantasmagoric swirl of sights, sounds, smells and creatures. Creatures like palmetto bugs. When I was in town being interviewed, the station manager, promotion manager and I were walking back to my hotel along Decatur Street when I heard a snap and a squish. I asked, “What was that?”
“Oh,” the station manager said nonchalantly, looking down, “I just stepped on a palmetto bug.”
If the term palmetto bug conjures up images of nice little insects that alight softly on your arm and then flutter harmlessly away, something akin to lightning bugs or lady bugs, you’ve never been to New Orleans. We’re talking red Nazi helmets with skinny legs here folks. We’re talking tough, high-school drop outs that wear tattoos and smoke cigarettes. Bugs so big you can hear their footsteps, bugs so brazen they scurry out on the sidewalk and grab tourists pant legs and scuff their shoes. The sight of one of them lying dead upside down with their feet stuck straight up in the air in the middle of your medicine cabinet as you’re reaching for the toothpaste is enough to make you swear off brushing your teeth. I never got used to palmetto bugs. And in New Orleans, they can be everywhere.

Of course, one of the main tourists’ attractions in New Orleans and just one block over from WDSU and Royal Street in the French Quarter is Bourbon Street. It’s a ten-block stretch of honky-tonk bars, strip joints, fancy restaurants, T-shirt emporiums, voodoo supply shops, and clubs where the sounds of live music waft from the doors like the sirens of Greek mythology luring you in for a hurricane or other strong and exotic drinks.

It’s sleazy and seedy side-by-side with trendy and chic. You can watch women wrestle in the nude (or damn near it!) then walk next door to eat in of the best restaurants in town. My first night in town, I stood in the doorway of a club that showcased female impersonators—these guys don’t wear make-up and wigs and just look like women, they pack all the equipment a women does and it’s all there for you to see. It’s enough to confuse the hell out of any guy! Suddenly, this guy/girl puts his/her arm around me seductively and says huskily, “hey, you’re cute!” I didn’t know whether to punch him or kiss her! Yes, SCOTT WOOLDRIDGE is the new CSD at Boston’s CBS, WBZ. After denying it, no doubt for GM type reasons, WENDY McMAHON confirmed via Facebook that Scott is leaving his native Minnesota and traveling east to Beantown to take the gig. Scott is a dyed in the wool Minnesota guy, and I can’t imagine him not loving Boston. Great town if you can deal with the snow, which Scott obviously can. Wendy, safe travels to LA, which you will LOVE, and Well Dunne! to Scott.

The folks at Hallmark Channel care enough to name SUSANNE SMITH McAVOY senior VP of Marketing. She was formerly VP of Ad Sales. Under the new structure, she’ll do marketing and branding. Oh, and that includes Hallmark Movie Channel, too. Also it’s a homecoming (a real Hallmark moment) for MARK KERN who’s now the VP of Communications and Media Relations. He was with Hallmark when they launched and has a background that includes media and PR for Reelz and Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video companies. Well Dunne! you two.

As we move into that new world of communicating, MARTIN REIDY is poised to be in the right place at the right time for Meredith…he’s been named President of the Meredith Integrated Marketing unit. He comes from Prez of Publicis Moden and Digital. Cool.

Voice artist CHRIS HENDRIE and family are safe in Studio City, having had their Tujunga Canyon home evacuated over the weekend. The LA fires are particularly large this year, and some of the video of the areas on fire are impressive if not frightening.

Ola! one and all. Albuquerque’s KOB TV, NBC for the Land of Enchantment, has a writer producer who’s new to the world of TV promo. Welcome to JEREMY FINE, who was in the newsroom before CSD VINCE GASPARICH rescued him. (Note to Newsies…no offense, but the world of entertainment marketing is way easier on a person and their talent and, by most reports, much more fun.) Jeremy has been at KOB since 2002 as a photog/editor who worked on special reports and investigative pieces. Well Dunne! Jeremy!

Well I gotta give it to ABC and the new lineup on “Dancing With The Stars”. It’s a wild bunch that might not do well around a formal dinner table, but it IS interesting. From Kelly Osborne to Tom DeLay. What? A former Congressman dancing? Makes sense to me, since he would have some pretty fancy footwork to stay out of jail. Here’s the list.

Gotta love baseball and TV when they combine. Shooters Post & Transfer just finished a major project for MASN, (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network), the Baltimore, MD-based regional sports network owned jointly by the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals. They mixed a cast of real fans and the complex post production that centered on creating intricate 3D virtual sets that evoked the iconic look of Camden Yards and Nationals Park -- the home stadiums for the two teams. Way cool.

Cute…when Blog Cabin on DIY returns Aug 27, the show will be about building a tree house. Anybody else love tree houses?

Go West Young Man, the Horace Greeley advice was part of the temptation that found DON SMITH’s heading past the Mississippi. He traded central Florida for Salt Lake City, where he took the CSD slot at Newport’s ABC affil, KTVX. Now, he and his lovely finance are headed further West, this time to the capital of the Golden State, Sacramento. Don is thrilled to be the new Promotion Manager at CBS’s KOVR. Don will be working with CSD DREW FOWLER, another fave guy. Sounds like a road trip is order now. Don is a Belo alum and a great guy. The station is a fave, too…at one time owned by a close friend’s father and then the creative home to some of the most amazing done under the late JOHN TISCHENDORF. Well Dunne! Don. What an eye-opening few weeks it has been. As I call stations to discuss voice needs – I am continually shocked to find talented people gone from slots they had been in for a long time. People who know how to market, not just market TV. The list is impressive in its scope and alarming in its length. Yes, things change. But I maintain and will always maintain that good people are assets. Ideas are assets. Einstein said that. Let’s remember to be kinder to each other and help each other out.

Following the NBC move on Friday to eliminate the local promo departments and do some sort of hub situation, the Chicago Sun Times wrote about how the new leaner way to cover news will be handled at WMAQ. Click he re.

STEVE SIMPSON is NOT related to any of the other Simpsons who have graced our TV tubes for so long. He is however the News Marketing Director of Salt Lake City’s CBS affil, KUTV. A native Utahn (yes, that is spelled correctly and it is what they call natives of Utah and yes, they do need to come up with something much better asap), Steve had his own production company before signing on at the Four Points station. UPDATE: This isn't just DFW...its nationwide. ALL the NBC O&O Creative promo marketing folks are on their way out. NYC will operate from something they call MOTHER. Anybody have an idea what word we can use right after that one? This SUCKS MAJOR LEAGUE. The talented, creative, amazing people at these stations are asssets. ASSETS. So sad.

I don't like reporting rumors, because so many of them are just nuts. And I avoid writing trash about people and companies most of the time. But this rumor has come to me from MANY sources, so there's something afoot. Word is that the entire promo department at NBC's KXAS in Dallas have been told they have til the end of August. Then the promos will be done out of New York. This would SO SUCK. More tomorrow.

Down Louisiana way comes word that Tribune-owned ABC affil WGNO has hired BOBBY CHILDS. The promotions writer producer is a native of Laplace, LA, which is part of St. John the Baptist parish. Isn’t that evocative? Laplace is also the "Andouille Capital of the World". Bobby comes back to New Orleans after being with NBC affil WVLA in Baton Rouge. A grad of SE Louisiana U in Hammond (majoring in Mass Comm and Theatre), Bobby is a gadget guy who loves to write and post. He met his boss, CSD KELLY DONNELL, back at NO’s UPN. They just finished up a kickin’ campaign for their Wheel of Justice segments. Well Dunne! Bobby!

NBC affiliate KVOA is bringing ANDREW CALIENDO in from Phoenix to get their promotion and creative services department up and running . Further down the Pacific coast, Twentieth Century Fox TV has made some changes, turning one division into two. Corporate communications Senior VP CHRIS ALEXANDER will head up publicity and talent relations, while brand management and strategy Senior VP MARK PEARSON has been tapped to oversee marketing and research. Marketing Senior VP STEVEN MELNICK will oversee 20th's new-media initiatives. Yep, all about branding and communicating. Well Dunne!

Sorry to have missed voice talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS birthday. He’s got such a great set of pipes. Yesterday was the day he used those lungs to blow out the birthday cake candles.

They specialize in comedy promotion and their names and titles are JAY LUTSKY, CBS Television Creative Director, On-Air Promo and DAN GREENBERGER, CBS On-Air Promo Senior Writer/Producer/Editor. Throw in Director/Editor RIC SERENA, add off hours work and a lot of enthusiasm, creativity and energy and…voila! You have, drum roll please, Captain Alpha Male, an original web comedy series which hits the web waves today. It’s about a middle management superhero with a graying beard and an affection for business casual. Loving it. Captain Alpha Male will also feature the last-ever on-camera performance by the late, renowned movie trailer voice over talent, DON LA FONTAINE. Well Dunne! to one and all on this one. Turning 60 is not too shabby. One such birthday with 60 candles on the cake is for CBS affiliate WBTV in Charlotte, NC. The newspaper there has an interesting retrospective about the now Raycom station. CSD JOHN RICE must have his PR hat on. Well Dunne!

Sadly, Charlotte has more news. The passing of former WCNC General Manager STU POWELL. Stu was my boss, and he had what many in the biz now lack- a great sense of humor. He fought but lost a tough battle with cancer. He leaves behind a very loving family and so many happy memories. Stu will always share a bond with me that will never be forgotten – 9/11. It was a call from Stu that made me look up to see the coverage and it was Stu standing next to me when the second plane went into the tower. As a matter of fact, it was Stu who was my first phone call when my brother died. Rest well and in peace.

The entertainment marketing community lost another sweet soul. This is what the Scripps people have released:

Mr. JEFFREY SEARS, vice president of creative services at DIY Network, died June 28 in Knoxville, Tenn., of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. A 12-year Scripps Networks veteran, Mr. Sears worked on the promotions team at HGTV before assuming his position at DIY Network.

JOHN LANSING, president of Scripps Networks, credited Mr. Sears with being one of the architects of DIY Network’s success. “His special talent and creativity can be seen in the unmistakably compelling on-air personality of DIY in recent years,” Mr. Lansing said. “This news hits all of us hard, and especially those who knew Jeff and worked closely with him.”

Mr. Sears is survived by his wife, Joan, and teenage son, Connor.

In today’s TV marketing environment, especially on the station side of things, it’s particularly difficult to get truly creative concepts approved and on the air. But when it DOES happen, it’s a thing of beauty. Such is the case with the stations winning PROMAX accolades. Hats off to the following station efforts, which either won a Gold, Silver or Bronze last week in NYC: San Francisco’s KPIX, Boston’s WBZ/WSBK, Dallas’ WFAA, Dallas’s KXAS, Chicago’s WLS, Dallas’ KDFW, Minneapolis’ WCCO, DC’s WTTG and Memphis’ WHBQ. BETH POLISH has been named director of Corporate Innovation for Hearst Corporation and senior vice president of Hearst Interactive Media. In this newly created position, Polish is developing and leading an employee innovation program focusing on inspiring Hearst's nearly 20,000 employees, across more than 200 businesses, to develop their creative business ideas into profitable ventures with the support of the company. Polish has held senior management positions in media, finance, private investment and technology.

Coming on board at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) is RUSSELL ARONS, whose biz card will read SVP/Worldwide Marketing. She (yes, Russell is a lady…see the picture) comes over from Electronic Arts, the game company, where she handled marketing. At one time, she had another cool title: VP and GM of Barbie at Mattel. As PROMAX kicks off in NYC this morning, station-side creatives are hard at work in their own offices or, sadly, wondering what their next opportunity will be. Cut-backs have done just that, cut a wide swatch through the industry. The word “echo” was used to describe a Top 5 operation where so many have been jettisoned, it was shocking. OK, that said, let’s move on with an eye to the future and a note to be kind to each other. You meet the same people going up as you do going down.

MOLLY KELLY got a boot upstairs. While we’re in that neck of America, over in Madison Wisconsin comes word that GRANT FENSTER has been writing and producing Topicals at WKOW, the ABC affil in the state capital of the Badger State. Yes, the one owned by Quincy Newspapers. Before transitioning to promos, Grant was producing the AM News show. Well Dunne!

You brand and promote with them, that’s what. 99 Tigers is the new entity of former Crossroads’ GLENN LAZZARO and DAVID SEELEY, who have formed their own company for on-air promotion, network marketing, and collaborative efforts with affinity agencies. Joining Lazzaro and Seeley at 99 Tigers are BRETT KARLEY, producer, and ASTRA DORF, who will continue to head up marketing for the group. Before we post Chapter 4 of PAUL GREELEY's ongoing contributions, we want to send our best thoughts and condolenses to Well Dunne! Talent's NICK SANABRIA, whose mother passed away yesterday. Vi was a Chicagoan and was in her 90's. She leaves behind many who loved her, including her gifted and fabulous son.

I joke that as the only staff writer at New York Communications, a typical day starts with finding a slip of paper under my office door. The paper lists the call letters of the TV station, the talent’s name, and the objective of the spot I’m to write: Show weather guy as accurate; or an ID Recognition spot for a new female anchor talent—the name, the face, the place; or sports anchor—show how the guy works hard but has fun, etc. At the end of the day, I slip a script out under the door.

For a sports anchor in North Carolina , I imagine what it’s like when he is always thinking about sports. When a Los Angeles radio station has an identity problem, I send the radio station to see a shrink. When the Royals are getting ready to play baseball on TV in Kansas City , I imagine a young fan is, too. And when the super-popular Joan Lunden returns to Good Morning, America after having a baby, I make it appear as if she’s talking directly to a couple viewers at home.

I never actually see any of the talent, never watch a newscast, and rarely meet anyone from the TV stations I’m writing for. Understandably, Mike is the face of New York Communications. Once, Mike invites me to dinner to join some out-of-town clients at Bookbinder’s, a famous seafood restaurant in Philly. During dinner, the clients’ conversation turns to talk about how a weather man at a competing station in their market has been caught soliciting sex from teenage boys in a park. Without missing a beat, Mike quips, “Well, I guess that adds a whole new meaning when he says it’s going to be dipping into the teens tonight.”

So most of the time I create these spots in a vacuum, but not always. One morning, Mike hands me some beta tapes and asks me to take a look at them. He says, “See if you think we could make some promos out of these.” The tapes contain a two-camera shoot with legendary New York news anchor, Bill Buetel from WABC. The interview takes place in his office at WABC. In the interview, Buetel is relaxed as Mike, off camera, asks him questions about his job, his co-workers, New York , WABC, the importance of local news, the viewers, etc.

While one of the cameras focuses on keeping Buetel in the frame, the other roams freely around the office, the desk, pictures on the wall, Buetel’s tie, his hands, etc. Buetel is articulate, insightful, honest, and revealing. At one point, Buetel talks about how much it means to him when New Yorkers come up to him at the grocery store or coffee shop to talk to him or thank him for being there every night on WABC. He cites that as his reason for being so passionate about his job---that responsibility to those people to get it right.

In the middle of the interview, there is a knock on the door. Buetel yells through the door that he’s busy, and is not to be interrupted. Again, a knock on the door. Buetel stuffs out a cigarette and the camera follows him to the door as he opens it. He confers with someone, then comes back to announce that the interview is over---New York Mayor Ed Koch, he’s been told, has just had a heart attack and he needs to go on the air live in the newsroom.

Buetel slips on his jacket and hitches up his tie as the cameras keep rolling, out the door, down the hall, past co-workers, and into a frenzied newsroom, to a desk in the newsroom that is already lit for his live shot. A producer asks if he wants to use the tele-prompter, and Buetel says no. As Buetel puts on his microphone and slips into the seat, he confers quietly with the producer and looks over the notes about what are the facts about Mayor Koch’s condition—what happened, when, where the mayor is now, etc. The camera captures his cool demeanor as he looks into the camera and, off the cuff, calmly reports about the condition of the mayor.

After viewing the tape, I tell Mike that I think there are several promos within the tapes that clearly demonstrate Buetel’s leadership in the newsroom, his passion for his job, and his calmness under duress. I never talk to anyone at WABC, but weeks later, Mike tells me that WABC wants a scripted spot that portrays Buetel in the newsroom interacting with his co-workers to demonstrate Buetel’s leadership. For some reason, instead of his real co-workers, actors are used as producers, reporters, etc.

The spot airs on WABC and some time later, I read an article about a speech that Tom Brokaw has given to journalism students at Fordham University in which he describes the Buetel promo as a ‘carefully, contrived sketch’. When I ask Mike if WABC is upset about Brokaw’s remarks or the spot itself, Mike says, “No, the research came back that Buetel’s leadership scores are way up.”

The only TV station where I do have a sense of the on-air news personalities is the one I grew up watching in Philly, WPVI’s Action News. By every measure—revenue, ratings dominance, popularity of the news personalities—WPVI’s Action News is the most successful local TV station and news operation in the country. And has been since the 1970s. Few local TV news teams (WWL in New Orleans comes to mind) in America are as woven into the daily fabric of life as Action News. For millions of news viewers in the Delaware Valley , from Wilmington to Trenton , from Cape May to Allentown , as the song goes, it’s gotta be Action News.

Occasionally, Mike lets me tag along to WPVI and leaves me sitting in the newsroom while he meets with management. I watch Jim Gardner, Marc Howard and Lisa Thomas Laury typing their stories, yelling out from time to time on how to spell a word or two. I was as guilty as some viewers in thinking that these ‘stars’ just show up and read the news. On another visit to the newsroom, I watch a news producer go into a tirade because of a snafu in the beginning of a newscast. I whisper to a very young man sitting next to me, “What’s that guy’s problem?” He looks up and watches the producer’s antics for a second, then looks back at me and says, “You know what his problem is—he cares.”

So I’m excited when I get the chance to write something for the news team I grew up watching. But as importantly, I get to write a news promo that my family and friends will see. It’s one thing to write a TV spot for Good Morning, America that gets seen nationally, but it’s not quite as special as writing a spot my mom can point to and say her son wrote. Mike tells me that Art Moore, WPVI’s program director, (Moore is currently program director for WABC and supervises production of Regis and Kelly) wants us to do a news image spot for the Action News weekend newscasts featuring Rob Jennings and Gary Papa. Jennings and Papa’s “Q” scores are higher than any of the other Philly stations’ weekday news personalities in town.

On another occasion, I write a spot to promote a half-hour special for WPVI’s main anchor, Jim Gardner. For Gardner ’s on-camera part, I join the production team at the Vietnam Memorial in Wilmington . On this particular day, my wife is in the hospital getting ready to deliver our second daughter by Caesarian section and I bum some quarters and walk around the park trying to find a phone booth to call her but couldn’t find any. When Gardner hears of my plight, he tosses me the keys to his BMW and instructs me to use his car phone, the first car phone I had ever seen. When I get my wife on the phone, all we can talk about is that we’re using Jim Gardner’s car phone!

Down in lovely Louisville, KIRK SZESNY is going to have a poolside summer. No, he’s still CSD at Belo’s WHAS, the ABC affil in Derby town. But he’s going to put in a little pool time as lifeguard at the Louisville Country Club. Sound divine. Remember the sunscreen, Kirk. Don’t get too Well Dunne!

Did you know MARTY SCHLESINGER was a major BMX Biker? Well, now you do. He’s basically a pro. This summer, he’ll be doing that teacher thing at a California camp, where the kids will have extreme fun. He’ll be taking leave of his Hawaiian paradise for time in Tehachapi. CA. JASON BOYER had spent several years producing at WJW in Cleveland, one of the strongest Fox stations in the country. He had a great reel, a great attitude, and due to some recent shuffling and down-sizing he was working as a freelancer in Columbus, Ohio. Since his wife and 4 kids all lived in Cleveland, and he was commuting 2-3 hours down to his freelance job, his decision to be part of WOIO was an easy decision for him. Among the other perks, Jason has a mere 15 minute commute, which translates to more family time. Jason is tearin’ things up at the Raycom CBS affil and is particularly at home in the edit suite. Well Dunne! Jason. And thanks to CSD ROB BOENAU for the update (and for writing most of this graph).

Hey all you baseball fans – DIY and MLB Nets have something that might be up your alley: a baseball-themed Man Cave. That translates to transforming a room with official MLB merchandise from a favorite team, high-tech toys and deluxe furnishings. DOM NARDO is going back to work for Scripps, trading his CBS KYW TV CSD slot for a seat at the creative helm of WCPO, the ABC affil in The Queen City. Dom worked for Scripps in Kansas City, where he was doing promos for KSHB, NBC in KC, so this is a reconnection. One the Scripps folks are excited about. Dom, too. He begins June 16. Well Dunne! Dom. Over this holiday weekend, exciting events were afoot for DON SMITH, the CSD at Salt Lake City’s ABC affil, KTVX. He got engaged! The lovely Nicole has said “yes”. Of course she did. She’s in Orlando, where Don used to work at WESH in Winter Park. Congrats! Such happy news!

Did anybody see the Papa John’s pizza spots this weekend? There were on tons and tons via my Direct TV hookup. Why mention it? Because Well Dunne! Talent’s MITCH PHILLIPS was part of the spot. His deep tones will be on hand at the upcoming PROMAX Conference when he emcees the bda Awards. Cool.

Who is singing ‘California Here I Come’? The lovely and talented JORDANA HOUCHINS, who is going to head west over the Memorial Day weekend, the Golden State her destination. SoCal to be exact….LA baby! Jordana will be departing WCCB, Bahakel’s FOX affiliate in Charlotte to take a Promo Producer slot at Trib’s KTLA. Yep, the KTLA over on Sunset…the one with such cool Hollywood history. She won’t be wheeling down Route 66 – no time. She’ll wing it over FlyOver Country, her car to be delivered soon after. See, her new position begins next week. This isn’t the first time Jordana has made the all the way cross-country trek…she moved to Charlotte from her native Seattle, where she worked at KING. Her background in TV News (KENS in San Antonio) combined with her promo background should be just the ticket for KTLA. A huge Hollywood Well Dunne! Jordana. CBS Chicago has gone through a lot of changes in the last six or so months. New building, new address, new ND and GM. The latest change is in their marketing chair to head the advertising, promotion and new media presence. Who did they find? Someone who knows the Chicagoland area well. This is a gorgeous time of the year up in Minnesota. Sparkling lake waters once again invite boats and people, trees and flowers are in full bloom and the temps are perfect for being comfortable and sleeping with the windows open. That makes it especially wonderful for PAUL GAULKE, who has taken the slot of Creative Services Director of KSTP, the ABC affil in the Twin Cities. Paul and his lovely wife traded their Richmond, VA address for one in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area when she took a job there the end of ’08. Paul had been with Media General for 11 years and this new opportunity will enable him to continue to strategize, manage and keep the creative streak going for the fine folks at Hubbard. The slot opened when ANDREA CREECH followed her heart with the man of her dreams. Ah, romance! This is, btw, not the first time Paul has worked in the Twin Cities. He was at KARE as an intern! Florida sun and sand are still in ANDRE BOYD’s life. He’s taken the slot of Marketing Director at WPGX, Raycom’s FOX affiliate in Panama City, FL. The Florida State alum is familiar with the Panhandle, having not only gone to college in this particularly pretty part of the sunshine state, but Andre has also worked in state capital Tallahassee at both WGLF and WTLH. With the exception of three years in Charlotte, NC as Marketing and Promotions Director of WJZY, all of Andre’s gigs were Florida based. That’s luck! He’s been at WJWB in Jacksonville and most recently was Internet Sales & Special Projects Manager at Hearst’s WKCF, The CW affil in Orlando. Great news, Andre. Well Dunne!

Excitement at the end of the week. Love it! Let’s start with MARK BRADLEY, who is getting ready for the move north from his Charleston, SC home. Mark has accepted the CSD slot at Hearst’s Portland, ME station, WMTW. The ABC affil is headed up by one cool GM, KEN BAUDER. Portland is a great town, full of art and restaurants and affordable lobster bisque. Mark isn’t traveling too far from the Atlantic, but he will be traveling from family, who traded their Westchester County address for a Charleston one a while ago. Mrs. Bradley is from neighboring Mt. Pleasant, home of amazing outlets, btw. The NYC guy went to school at UNC and stayed in the Carolinas, working for Capital in Raleigh and then went to Charleston in 1991. Congrats and Well Dunne! Mark. Great news for a great guy.

Speaking of NYC, Well Dunne! Talent’s AUSTIN KEYES is headed there for such a terrific reason. He’s announcing the Celebrity Apprentice finale show this Sunday night…LIVE. Yeah baby! Don’t you just love it when the kids make you proud? When PHIL KRAFT walks into CBS’s KTVT in Dallas/Ft. Worth June 1 to be part of CSD DAVID HERSHEY’s creative team, Phil will be bringing knowledge honed in some of the best newsrooms and creative shops in the biz. Once he was a news editor, banging out stories in a little windowless cubie at Belo’s WCNC in Charlotte. He wanted more (and he probably wanted a window) so he applied to creative services. Then his natural talents took over. He became a cracker jack Topical producer who honed his craft and upped the ante at DC’s WJLA, San Fran’s KPIX and Orlando’s WFTV. Phil calls Miami home, but his Pops lives in nearby San Antonio, so his new Texas life will be exciting. A huge Well Dunne! to him.

And another congrats goes to KPRC Art Director DOUGLAS KARABASZ’ wife, Shilpa, who picked up her well-earned Executive MBA from Michigan this weekend.

Speaking of KPRC (and I know this will sound like I’m picking on them, but they’re just the ones that exemplify it) have any of you listened to your phone systems? They, by and large, are HORRIBLE. You can’t get a person to help you find someone. Stations use their news talent, and bad scripts, to answer. One station even says "that's the way we roll" OMG. Is the point NOT to talk with the public? Because that’s what it seems like. Heaven forbid I’d want to buy time. Dial yourself and tell me if that’s the image you want. Go on.

MICHELLE ANDRIANO is thrilled to be part of the creative team at the Quincy Newspaper’s ABC affiliate in the Wisconsin capital. She’s a Chicago area girl, calling Dundee, IL home. After she did an internship at Chicago’s WGN TV, she nabbed a job as associate writer producer at FOX affil WXIN in Indianapolis. Hmm, another capital city. A week later, I’m back in front of Mike Davis at New York Communications with several ideas for the 10pm newscast on WPIX in New York. In 1986, the idea of a 10pm newscast in the Eastern Time zone is new, and I believe WPIX is the first station in the country to do one.

One of the spots I write has a guy and his wife sitting in the living room having just finished watching the 10 o’clock news on TV. The guy’s talking about all the things he can do now with the extra hour he’s saved by watching the news at 10, “I could learn Latin, take scuba lessons”, etc. His wife gives him a peck on the cheek as she heads off to bed and says, “You forgot one.”

Mike likes the spot and several others and offers me a full-time job at New York Communications. Now I can tell my family and friends, I’m a writer.

New York Communications has an impressive client list for a small ad agency. In 1986, Mike Davis’s clients are Good Morning America, (ABC), and most of ABC’s Owned & Operated affiliates—WABC (New York), WPVI, (Philly), KABC (L.A.), WLS (Chicago), and WTVD (Raleigh/Durham), as well as other TV, radio stations and newspapers across the country. But it’s Davis’s work in marketing and promoting local TV news that he’s best known for. From the early 1970s up to today, no other person has had as much influence in generating local news ratings as Mike Davis.

Davis is renowned for creating the best-known and most seen news promo over the past 40 years. Totally original, very unconventional, and often imitated, most people know it as the ‘there’s that news van’ spot. At New York Communications, we call it “Home Movies”. The premise is a family at home watching home movies of their trip to Philly (or New York, or wherever), and no matter where they go around town, there’s a news van going through the shot. Davis’s mantra at New York is news promotion by objective, and in this case “Home Movies” sells the idea of ‘we’re everywhere’ like a heat-seeking missile. “Home Movies” is probably the most-syndicated news promo in local TV news, with versions airing for WPVI’s Action News in Philly and WABC’s Eyewitness News in New York and many other mostly major market TV stations around the country.

Although the original idea for “Home Movies” is not mine, I write several “Son of Home Movies” for Philly and New York—same exact premise but with new, fresh vignettes and locations. In the “Home Movies” spots, there’s always a food joke, a mangling of the name of a popular food from the area. I’m at lunch one day when this guy comes up to me and in a southern accent, says, ‘say son, can you tell me where I can me one of those ‘hodgies? So that became the food joke in the second version of “Home Movies” for WPVI’s Action News. In the Philly area, ‘hoagies’ and ‘cheesesteaks’ are ubiquitous, with a hoagie shop on practically every corner.

In addition to NYC, which did all the creative work, Mike Davis also owns another business on the premises in the big, old house on State Rd outside Philly. Prime Productions is the production arm of NYC. Once the creative is approved by the client, Prime takes over. Prime, mostly freelance producers, photographers, directors, etc, is run by Don Creamer, who does everything from budgeting to editing. Don is in the office right next to mine, and edits the spots on one of those old, flat-bed film editing machines, called a Steenbeck, named for the man who invented it. He sits there, razor blades in his mouth, cutting and taping pieces of film together, syncing audio, and keeping track of all his edits with a grease pencil. Watching him edit film is like watching a paperhanger put up wallpaper—it all looks chaotic with pieces of film all over the place until it all magically comes together at the end. I often wonder how he never cuts his lips or tongue off with all those razor blades shifting around his mouth.

To achieve the grainy, old film look for the “Home Movies” spots, Don would call me into his office, and I’d walk on the film strips he’s thrown on the floor.

I’m the only staff writer at New York Communications. My job is to come up with ideas and concepts for news image spots that promote local TV news operations all over the country. Mike would either call me down to his office or visit mine. He’d say, ‘we have a new creative assignment’, my cue to get paper and pen and take notes. I like this part the best, because as he gives me the parameters, ideas and concepts automatically start popping into my head.

Mike would give me a deadline, usually a couple days, to come back with concepts, pieces of script, images, a line of copy, half-baked ideas, whatever I could think of. From the sublime to the ridiculous, he used to say. So over the next few days, I’d be in my office. I’d look out the window, go through my thesaurus, smoke a cigarette, pace, drink coffee, take a walk, and, hopefully, jot down stuff. People think being creative is easy, fun, and it is when you’re inspired, when your muse is whispering little ideas into your head. But the pressure to produce can be paralyzing. Sometimes, I wake up at night trying to think of ideas when I know I have a deadline to meet that day and I have nothing. So I’d climb out of bed and go to a 24-hour diner near my house. I sit there with the truck drivers and drunks drinking coffee, jotting down ideas for a sports guy in Denver, or a weather team in Raleigh.

Soaking up the beautiful north Florida sunshine in state capital Tallahassee is JASON LYNN. He’s a Florida guy by birth, so he is no doubt using the right sunscreen. When not outside under the palms amongst the blooming azaleas, he’s the new promo producer for Sinclair’s WTWC, an NBC affiliate. Monday was his first day, and he made the move from Panama City's ABC affil, WMBB where he handled production for commercials, etc. Jason’s always been drawn to telling stories through a lens – he started making films with the family camcorder. Once he got his degree from Univ of West Florida, he’s been involved in long and short form projects – and happy about it. Well Dunne! Jason. I know you’ll enjoy working with CSD STEVE LEMON, who himself is involved in a project – a documentary about his father’s spy plane.

Penn State’s KELLIE GRUTKO has been named VP of Marketing for Comcast Spotlight. She’ll do the branding, promos, communications and corporate creative stuff. Well Dunne!

What do you do when you’re a Buffalo Bills fan (in addition to being a native of Buffalo) and find yourself smack dab in the middle of Super Bowl Winner territory Pittsburgh? Not sure yet, but it’s the spot that STEVE PATRICK is in thanks to his new job as Assistant Promotion Manager at Hearst’s ABC affil in Steel City, WTAE. Steve’s been at the new job for about a month now, having moved down from the aforementioned Buffalo where he spent 8 years at CBS affil WIVB. CSD SHERRY CARPENTER says great things about him and he’s thrilled about his new station and new city. Steve’s background is an exciting one – he spent 10 years in New York City working at ad agencies and a great post house. Gotta love a guy who loves to write. So people, add him to our Faves List! Well Dunne! Steve.

Too bad Sprint didn’t take the boatloads of cash it paid out for some bangin’ TV spots (seen last night during HOUSE and 24 on FOX) and put that cash into customer service. Marketing is, after all, a whole effort, and no matter how good their on-air spots are, their customer service is so dreadfully bad, anybody who signs up will quickly sign off. Yeah, I’m a FORMER Sprint customer.

Happy Spring! April snuck up and, despite the fact it is snowing in such locales as Chicago and Louisville, the reinvigorated feeling of a fresh start is in the air.

Speaking of fresh starts, STEVE KOONCE is making one even as you read this (if you read this on Monday). In order to get his new job off the ground, Steve is looking for places to live in his new home town, Salt Lake City. Looking for a place to call home can be daunting, but no doubt Steve is up to it. He is the new writer-producer at KTVX, abc4.com in the Beehive state capital. Steve makes the trek back west from time spent doing topicals at DC’s WJLA. If the name seems familiar, it’s no doubt because his dad, JIM KOONCE, has been helming the creative efforts at Las Vegas’ ABC affil, KNTV. Looks like the Alphabet Web net runs in the family. New York Communications is situated in a big old 3-story house on a busy street in a suburb just outside the city limits of Philadelphia . I park next to a black BMW and go inside.

Mike Davis, the president and owner of New York Communications, is sitting behind a huge desk centered in the middle of the room. He looks a lot like the actor, Richard Dreyfes.

“Your cover letter was cute, Paul”. He has a twinkle in his eye and I like him right away.

“That your black BMW in the parking lot?” I ask.

“Yes, everything you wrote is pretty much right on target except I don’t have my own parking spot”, he says smiling.

Mike takes me back to a room with a tape machine and puts a tape in. The tape has funny, inventive commercials for local TV news teams, radio stations and newspapers all over the country. Some I’d already seen on TV because they’re for WPVI’s Action News, the local ABC affiliate in Philly. Mike watches the tape with me, often looking at me for a reaction. Ten minutes later, the tape’s over and Mike looks at me and says, “Think you could write stuff like that?”

I pause a second, look him straight in the eye and say, “Yeah, I think I can”.

Back in his office, Mike hands me a note pad. “The client is WDAF in Kansas City . They air the Kansas City Royals baseball team and they need a 3-spot campaign. The objective is to make watching the Royals a family tradition that crosses generations, races and sexes. It’s an all-American kind of thing, I mean, this is the mid-west, for Christ’s sake, you know, baseball and apple-pie. Their positioning statement is ‘Get Ready for the Royals on WDAF’, got it?”

“Yeah, got it. What’s a positioning statement?”

Mike smiles. “A slogan, a motto, how they want their product positioned. Don’t worry too much about it, just leave a few seconds at the end for the announcer to say, ‘Get ready for the Royals on WDAF’, ok?”

It’s the Good Thursday before Easter and we agree that I would come back with some ideas and scripts the Monday after Easter.

It’s ironic that the first TV commercial I’m to write is about baseball. I just returned from a week-long trip to the Philadelphia Phillies’ fantasy camp known as Dream Week in Clearwater, Florida, a trip I’d won by writing an essay on ‘Why I want to go to Phillies Dream Week’. Sponsored by Philadelphia’s top-rated, morning-radio DJ, Harvey in the Morning, the camp attracts mostly older, die-hard Phillies fans, who typically spend a small fortune to go to the Phillies training facility to play baseball and hang out with former Phillies. I’ve written an essay and am one of 5 finalists invited to a Phillies game at Veterans Stadium where the Phillies Phanatic is to randomly select the winner.

Just before the game, we walk down the tunnel toward the bright lights and on to the field. When we get on the field, I have goose bumps all over. Everything is perfect! The field is a vibrant green Astroturf, the foul lines bright white and straight, the crowd of 50,000 plus cheering our entry. In that moment, I understand exactly why anyone would want to be a professional baseball player.

They gather us five finalists around home plate. Harvey, the DJ, is there, telling the crowd that this is going out live on the radio station. The crowd cheers. In front of us, a table is set up with five Phillies hats equally spaced on it with the name of each finalist tucked in it. The Phillies Phanatic is patrolling around the table, sticking his trademark tongue out and rolling his eyes, hitching his pants up and flopping around on the ground. Harvey explains that the Phanatic will mix up the hats and pick one. However, before Harvey ’s finished, the Phanatic takes a running leap and does a belly flop right on top of the table, riding it to the ground, the hats flying up in the air. The Phanatic grabs one as it drifts to the ground and deftly hands it right to Harvey . Harvey pulls the card out and says, “From Westtown, the winner is Paul Greeley!”

So on the ride home from Mike’s office, baseball is on my mind. I pull over three times to jot down ideas for spots. The Monday after Easter, I’m back in front of Mike Davis. He reads the spots and I strain hard to see any reaction.

“These are good, Paul”, he says matter-of-factly. “If the spots get produced, I’ll give you a hundred bucks a piece.”

I swallow hard. “Look, I asked around, and I think they’re worth five hundred bucks a piece.” We settle on three hundred if they get produced. We shake hands and Mike opens up a file on his desk, “Ok, the next client is WPIX in New York . They’re starting a 10 o’clock newscast and we need some spots showing the benefits of watching the news an hour earlier”.

Spring brings with it new beginnings. Yeah...we NEED new beginnings in so many ways. NICK SANABRIA, a Well Dunne! Talent, brought forth the idea that we are all experiencing so much that we can't process it and it's driving us mad. I mean, who isn't experiencing pressures and unsureness...who knows what the future honestly holds and who to trust...all around, we see businesses collapse along with projects and jobs evaporating. We are swamped.

That said, let's turn out sights to happy things. Back to new beginnings. RANDY FOULDS is trading his Tampa Bay address for one in La Quinta, CA. It's a homecoming of sorts - his first job as a promo writer producer was at KESQ. He's been in the promo world for 22 years at such locales as Tucson and New Orleans. Now, he'll be entering the family insurance business and, of course, bringing his own creative twist to it by adding insuring race cars and high-end collector autos. Cool! He's keeping his hand in the ad biz by working with two agencies and putting together a project with some other creative types. Stay in touch, Randy and Well Dunne! BTW, he has this advice: "Mentor those you can with patience and humor. The next generation of media needs our experience. And, for the next generation, choose your own mentors carefully; they can kill your career as easily as they can help you. Never stop learning and honing your talents. And, after 22 years, you will have the right to say been there, done that."

A sad note. Many of you know former GM IRWIN STARR. His significant other, Ms CHARLES ANN VALENTINE lost her valiant battle against brain cancer. The folks on Siesta Key, FL are going to hold a butterfuly relea

se in her name. So when you see a butterfly, think of the wondrous Charlie. She would love that.

Greetings and salutations, as they say. Sorry this got posted late, but life is a series of being flexible. Kicking off a Friday series of postings by marketing guru PAUL GREELEY. He's been there and done that and has the marketing chops...now he's sharing.

GETTING YOU TO WATCH By Paul Greeley
Chapter 1

It all started with an ad in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer: Writer—someone to write funny, inventive, effective television commercials that get attention. Send samples to New York Communications, P.O. Box 1234207 Philadelphia, Pa.

It was spring, 1986. I was living in the lovely, small village of Westtown , Pa, just outside West Chester , where I went to college for 13 years. I was jokingly known as ‘the Pete Rose’ of West Chester University because my career there spanned 3 decades from 1969 until I graduated with my first degree, a BA in English in 1981. (Pete Rose’s big-league career actually spanned 4 decades, from 1959 into the 1980’s). Years later, after interviewing Jay Leno backstage at a theater in New Orleans, I heard him joke to a young student in the audience pursuing the same degree, “yeah, I can see your first job----cab number 17!”

That Sunday morning, I was a starving free-lance writer, eking out a living with a couple corporate clients, supplementing our meager income by teaching remedial English at night to hopeful women at a local business college. My wife, Cindy, was working just three days a week, opting to spend more time with our daughter, Danielle, born in 1984. I fancied myself a writer, and had been scouring the want ads and applying to any job that remotely looked like it might involve writing. Our dinning room table was set up like an assembly line for job hunting—neat piles of envelopes, resumes, letters of reference, and writing samples of all kinds were spread out across it. So this ad, someone looking for a writer spoke right to me.

So I walk down the assembly line in the dining room, stuff the envelope with writing samples, and sit down to write a cover letter. By this time, I was bored writing the conventional cover letter that begins, “I am very interested in the job of….” Besides, if any want ad screamed for a creative cover letter, this was it! So I hand-wrote in black magic marker on the outside of the huge envelope, ‘VERY IMPORTANT PHOTOS ENCLOSED’, and began the cover letter with, “OK, so I lied about the photos. It was just a cheap gimmick to get your attention and I bet it worked.” The cover letter went on to say, “I won’t bullshit you, I never wrote a TV commercial before in my life, but I bet there was a time when you never did, and now look at you, a TV big-shot with a BMW, your own parking space, expense account and corner office."

I seal the envelope up, mail it and hope the phone rings.

Happy St Pat’s to one and all. For those into green beer…enjoy. The rest of us will continue our search for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and the luck attributed to the Irish.

Speaking of luck, LA-based Marketing guru MARTY IKER and his wife and daughter took their luck in advance of the day. They walked away from a crash on the 210, out near the San Dimas exit. It’s a rotten stretch of road, btw. They spun around after getting smacked…like a movie scene. Yes, they were shaken but not stirred.

Congrats to SKIP VALET, News Director at NBC affil KPRC in Houston. He’s headed back to Orlando to his “old” station WKMG to be the GM.

Happy Birthday to Well Dunne! Talent’s KEVIN GASSMAN, who is a popular on-air radio guy in Phoenix. Kevin, aka Gassman, will no doubt celebrate doubly this evening.

So we made it through the Ides of March…hopefully unscathed. Lots of good news, starting with the most exciting news of all…a new baby. LORI GRIMALDI, who has taken all the talents and skills honed while doing TV marketing, is adding a new line to her resume: MOM. Lori and her hubby are now the proud parents of BRENDON THOMAS MCGRATH. Congratulations and happiness always. Lori’s family is at home in Charlotte, NC. Well Dunne!

Congrats to Well Dunne! Talent’s MARK DRISCOLL, who is now the announcer for The Rusty Humphries Show, heard coast to coast on the Talk Radio Network. Excellent…and Well Dunne!

Anybody watching NBC's Celebrity Apprentice? Loved watching the bridal gown sales last night. It proved once and for all men and anybody with a tattoo should never wear white and strapless. Anyway, AUSTIN KEYES is the announcer for the show. Oh yea…he IS a Well Dunne! Talent.

Cancer has again taken away a TV Creative. Only 61. CBS Sports Creative Director DOUG TOWEY is gone. He was always a fan of TV and worked in the business for 34 years, putting his artistic mark on sports events of all kinds: Olympics, World Series, World Series, tennis, golf, basketball and more. An award winner, he counted Emmy’s, PROMAXs, BDA and Mobius on his shelf. Doug began his career as an on-air reporter for WLIW on Long Island and did a stint at WHLI Radio.

A funeral mass will take place at St. Thomas More Church at St. John’s University Saturday morning at 9:30. A fund has been set up in his name at Niagara University.

Who shares the same birthday as the Barbie doll? None other than Well Dunne! Talent’s SONNY WARNER. No doubt Sonny, unlike Barbie, celebrated with REAL cake and not the plastic kind. Best wishes for 365 great days til next birthday cake Ms. Warner.

Speaking of birthdays…KTVU’s CHUCK HARRELL found out he’s going to be a dad on or about July 15th. It’s a boy! More celebrations are in order for sure. I want a GOOD cigar, Chuck. He works as a writer producer for Cox’s FOX affil KTVU in the Bay Area under CSD JEFF HOLUB.

Oregan’s Portland, aka the Rose City, has news. comes word that L. SCOTT WELLS (that's him in the pix on the right) is freelancing for CSD RODGER O’CONNOR at CBS affil KOIN. Great to hear.

JILLIAN KUHN, (she's smiling on the left) who was cranking out some awesome spots in Raleigh for NBC before the Downsize Axe swung has good news. She’s staying the The Triangle (which is what they call Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) as Project Manager Assistant at Newfangled Web Factory. Well Dunne! Jillian! She loves the area and is thrilled to stay.

Life and Death Go Hand In Hand

Life and death go hand in hand. No matter how we rail or celebrate, everything has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Good or bad…it’s what happens. Today’s Well Dunne! is about endings.

Just this morning, 48-year-old voice artist BRIAN JAMES of Scottsdale, died of a heart attack. Brian’s voice is one you are no doubt familiar with. He’s heard on radio and TV stations like Philly’s KYW and Phoenix’ KPHO. Known as the Voice Jihadist, Brian was a “bad boy”. Information on funeral arrangements or a memorial is unavailable now, but I’ll post when they come across.

When LOU DORFSMAN passed away, the world of graphic artists became dimmer. His light was bright and awesome. Lou, if you need a little gentle reminder, developed and shepherded the CBS corporate brand, considered by many marketers to be one of the top five most recognized in the world. A memorial is planned for Lou this Monday, March 9 at 6pm at The Great Hall at Cooper Union, 7th Avenue and Third Street, New York City. All are welcome to gather and celebrate Lew, who left us at age 90. Thank you, LYN GRASZ, for sharing this information with all of us.

Heading to the verdant Northwest Arkansas area is KEN BAUER. He’s starting Monday (!) at KBHS/KHOG in Fort Smith in the natural state (official nickname). It’s the Hearst-owned ABC and CW outlet in this beautiful part of the world. Ken had been at Meredith’s CBS affils, WGCL in Atlanta and KCTV in Kansas City. Ken en familia look forward to making the move. Congrats and ALL our best. A Huge Well Dunne! Ken!

Congrats to the WHEEL OF FORTUNE, taking it’s 5,000th show to air. I wonder if any PR math whiz calculated how many spins have been spun in 5,000 shows? Well, no matter - Keep it up!
